Amazon Web Services has partnered with Yotta Data Services to deploy a hybrid cloud infrastructure for the National Informatics Centre under its Meghraj 2.0 initiative. The collaboration aims to modernise government IT systems by combining sovereign data centre infrastructure with advanced cloud capabilities, ensuring secure, scalable digital services for public-sector workloads.

The announcement was highlighted during an AWS symposium in New Delhi, where government and industry leaders discussed the growing importance of AI-ready cloud infrastructure. The hybrid deployment is designed to help Indian government departments manage sensitive workloads locally while benefiting from AWS cloud services when required.

Why Hybrid Cloud Is Central to Meghraj 2.0

At the core of this initiative is AWS Outposts, a fully managed service that extends AWS infrastructure and services to on-premises environments. By installing Outposts within NIC data centres, government departments can run regulated and data-sensitive workloads locally while maintaining seamless integration with AWS regions in India.

This hybrid architecture addresses key public sector requirements:

• Data residency and sovereignty compliance
• Low-latency access to critical applications
• On-demand scalability during peak usage
• Secure integration with AI and analytics services

During periods of high citizen service demand, applications can scale into AWS cloud regions and synchronise back with NIC infrastructure. This flexibility reduces the risk of downtime and performance bottlenecks that traditional on-premises systems often face.

Enabling AI and Advanced Workloads

The partnership is also structured to support artificial intelligence adoption within government departments. With growing interest in generative AI, automation, and data-driven governance, public sector agencies require infrastructure capable of handling computationally intensive workloads.

By combining Yotta’s sovereign data centre capabilities with AWS services, departments can leverage machine learning tools, data analytics platforms, and AI development frameworks without compromising regulatory compliance. This approach allows experimentation and production-grade deployment within a controlled infrastructure environment.

Jitin Prasada, Minister of State for Information Technology, emphasised that India’s digital transformation strategy depends on robust and inclusive cloud infrastructure. He noted that expanding secure compute capacity will help extend digital services to citizens across regions.

Sandeep Dutta, President of AWS India and South Asia, stated that the collaboration reflects AWS’s long-term commitment to supporting India’s public sector digitalisation goals. He highlighted that hybrid deployments allow government bodies to innovate while meeting strict compliance standards.

From Yotta’s side, Sunil Gupta, Co-founder and CEO, said the partnership strengthens India’s sovereign cloud ecosystem by integrating global cloud capabilities with domestic infrastructure. He added that the hybrid model will enable scalable AI use cases and improved service delivery across ministries.
